But it kind of depends on with which characters you write it.
    吸う (kanji suck/imbible/inhale/sip + u) means to smoke/to breathe in/to suck.
喫う (kanji consume/eat/drink/smoke/receive (a blow) + u) means to smoke.
You could also write it as this; 数 (kanji number/strength/fate/law/figures) which make the meaning figure or number.
And last 芻 which make it either grass cutting or hay (also the meaning of the kanji).

Going from what the first name was 'Aroma' I think the last name means 'To inhale' or 'To breathe in'. What seems to fit best would be 'To inhale aroma'.
So we're talking about smoking some hay and receiving a blow from the aroma? Sounds undoubtedly very Amallan Kaollan.

It would be interesting - and challenging - to check out some resources of Hawaiian or other Polynesian languages to find out whether Akamatsu-sensei used them as inspiration for the Molmol names (their forms, meanings, latin spellings). Another valid direction for research would be India; but to me, the names just feel like they hint towards the Pacific.

Does anyone know if the latin spellings were ever decided before "Love Hina" was translated into English? After all, there is some confusion in different media between Kaolla Su and Kaora Suu, Lamba Lu and Ramba Ru.

By the way, what is the correct adjective for Molmol? Molmolese, Molmolian, Molmolan (cf. Moroccan), Molmoli (cf. Israeli)? Molmolsh (cf. Welsh)?

Molmolrish (irish ) if Kaolla was to be any other national, it would be irish...

I think it would be Molmolian though

everywhere I've seen it referred to it's been as MolMolian.

MolMolish doesn't really work... most of the other ones sound strange when voiced out loud, but then it's a weird language

I'd say that either Molmolese or MolMolian was acceptable, but prefer MolMolian.

I've not found a definitive answer though

One fanfic I read - MediaMiner: Chapter 1 - goes further into some perhaps non-canon descriptions of old MolMol history and languages recommended read, even if only for Mary Su

    Wow, thanks Rei.

One further question: How many Molmolian words do we know from the LH canon? The names that I remember give this brief list:

    Amalla
    Kaolla
    Lamba
    Lu
    Molmol
    Su

    Any further?

Yah funny coincidence there, in't it? That people were striving to get to Todai in MolMol as well as Hinatasou

    you don't say??

It's just one of the amazing coincidences languages throw up. Countries in such proximity to each other are bound to have influences on each other's speech and perhaps customs too

Just for reference, Kaolla Su is written like this カオラ・スゥ

(I have yet to find a good meaning for it, if you read my other post, which is accurate, you'll notice that the characters are different though)

I am not fluent with kana. Could someone please break this down for me?

I thought ka-o-ra su-[vowel extender] (katakana) or ka-o-ra su-u (hiragana) would make it five symbols total, not six.

Especially considering the amount of places Japan invaded in the past.

I'm no expert or anything but that [vowel extender] What do you think that is?
Usually her last name is shown like this Sū, which seems the correct way to write Suu (the second u being a vowel extender). Just like in Keitarō as opposed to Keitarou which I always do.

If you have an u at the end is cases like su-u and ro-u then the u is the vowel extender which is still written.

(pretty much just using logic here, I've had no lessons in any form of character writing)

the six symbols Kata's talking about might refer to the dot/spacer character, which might be confusing?

    カオラスゥ

the vowel extender is the small symbol ゥ after ス, yes? I've seen this written as ス-- as well.

Ow yeah, the little dot. I think they use it to separate first and last name.

To Hinaright: Thanks! That was new to me.

To Mr. Anderson: The names with ou (pronounced as ō) are an exception. For the rest of the cases, let me cite The Magnificent Encyclopedia by Humankind:
