    Fans Who Lack Respect

I think I first met this phenomenon in the early nineties, getting acquainted with the hip-hop culture: established musicians accusing beginners for ignorance, lack of interest for pioneer works, and so on. It is a difficult topic, since besserwisser slackers love creating drama about it.

Anyway, today on the Shoutbox I ended up discussing annoying anime fangirls and fanboys with Yonathen. He claimed that some he had faced in the Netherlands had, in addition to their childish behavior, shown "actually plain disrespect towards the Asian culture". This had killed much of Yon's enthusiasm about meeting new people with supposedly shared interests.

I claimed that plain ignorance and stupidity as such do not equal disrespect, and challenged Yonathen to tell his story.

Once this thread transforms into a field of war, I might quietly disappear...

    __________

Here follows a cut and edited extract of the SB discussion that brought us this far:

Yonathen: Touhou stuff is just too hyperactive and attracts to many fangirls/boys. Not that I have a problem with them, but if I hear one more white chick saying things like "Baka, omae wa hidoi~" in an average day Fangirl conversation, I'll shit myself and then some more. And it's unlike me to think badly of others, so this means a lot.

Katajainen: ...You sound like you really see and hear lots of that fankids stuff.

Yon: Yeah, I did. I used to work in a sushi bar located at Holland's busiest train station, which of course attracted lots and lots of fangirls/boys. It was fine at the beginning, since I wasn't used to meeting people with similar interests as myself. [But with time I grew so annoyed that] I eventually quit my job there.

Katz: This is getting SSF, but what do you mean with "plain disrespect"?

Yon: Uhm, it's a long story but here it goes.

Katz: Shouldn't you post it on the forum if its lengthy? Could be educational for somebody else, too.

Yon: Oh yeah, but then I'll get the wrath of all those newbs.

First of all, thank you for the intro Kacchan.
Second, i'm not trying to insult, just to open their eyes so that they may actually fulfill their hidden potential again.
I'm not usually one to critize others, nor do I get angry alot, but on this rare occasion, please read my post.

    Please excuse my typos
I do not mind the fact that fangirls/boys use Japanese sentences in his or her average day conversation (most of the time badly pronounced aswell). In fact I started out as an amateur aswell, I didn’t know any Japanese except for the sentences I learned from anime and Japanese Drama’s.

But the difference between me and them is that I grew up in a Traditional Asian Family, so I do have a certain amount of respect for Japan and the Japanese culture.

Now i’m sure most of you are wondering what the hell i’m talking about, so i’ll get to the point now i’m done with my beforehand speech.

Nowadays your typical anime fangirls (I’ll use this from now on to address boys and girls) are just disrespectful towards the whole Asian Culture. Now I don’t know how the rest of the world handles it, but from what i experienced here in Holland, I can’t say otherwise that these fangirls actually view Anime and Manga as the true way that Japan is.

2 Years ago, I started my job in a Sushibar located at the busiest trainstation of Holland.
At the time I myself could also be called a fanboy, yet to my own surprise I found out I wasn’t one (atleast a small case of animetardism) At first it started out wonderfully, I went to my job everytime full of hope and joy, worked my heart out and met interesting people. Now what I haven’t told you yet is that at the time the Sushibar attracted more and more fangirls everyday.
So I was overjoyed as I hardly met others with similar interests as me.

Now, the more I spoke to them, the more I realised how childish and “underdeveloped” they are. I’m not saying they are dumb (sry most of them are) they just unknowingly surpresses their own potential in life due to their obsessive behaviour towards anime.

Day in day out I heard the same voices, the same sentences I normally only want to hear when I watch anime, the same unintellectual conversations, it amazes me how much they can talk about the same crap everytime again. And when it finally reached the point that even I can get irritated, I stood up and asked the girls to leave the store if all they were doing was talking about their delusions while only ordering 1 cup of freaking coke. Only to get insulted by them, but could you blame me?

They took up space other PAYING customers could use, they had a delusional image of the Japanese culture, they insulted actual Japanese who were visiting our sushibar by saying “Omae wa Nihonjin Deshou? Sugoi-ttebayo!”, Atleast google up some of those words and you might find out that anime Japanese is actually some disrespectful shit!
Then they critize my Japanese just because I didn’t know what Dojikko meant at the time.

This is just a small example of what I experienced, I could go on and one, but frankly, I have a life and a job I need to go to later on, so I do not wish to waste my time any further by talking about fangirls, behind their backs nonetheless. So I’ll just finish up with my top 5 annoying fangirl traits I encountered.

1.They use anime sentences in there daily life without knowing what the **** they mean.
2.They actually think their delusional view of Japan is true
3.They insult others when he or she haven’t seen/do not love the anime they like
4.They use honourifics like –Chan or –San wrongly, like addressing themselves with them -_-‘ (if you don’t know why that is a bad thing, I’m sorry you have a case of animetardism)
5.They are ****ing up the image of anime/manga fans, so that other people think i’m the mother****ing same as them fangirls just because i watch/read anime/manga

There i’ve done it, proof that I am capable of thinking bad of others. How do you like them apples Selo
    Satisfied Kacchan?

An Ironic thing to say is that the real fanboys/fangirls actually start learning things about Japan rather then just believe the anime/manga themselves is the real version of Japan. Of course this is just speculation.

I have an example fo such in the form of my sister (who is more of an anime/manga fan then I will ever be).

First, I will state that it helps that any/all of the animes/mangas my sister has seen have been in english, and therefor she wasnt able to absorb the words of the original Japanese versions.

Secondly, even before she got into anime she was interested in asian culture. I dont know when exactly she started learning basic Japanese, but it was a bit before she became a full out fan.

I could probally put my sister in front of the ones you saw, have her speak an actual sentence of proper Japanese, and still insult them in the process.

The type of people your talking about arent actual fans, what they are are Fadboys and Fadgirls. Anime is a big thing across the world, and because of that they get swallowed into it.

For them its natural to mimic it, rather then actually gain anything worthwhile from it.

If anime stopped being cool, then they'd stop watching it, theyd stop speaking Japanese, and you would no longer have to worry about it.

    ...dammit

I will admit though, my sister has had her Fadgirl moments. For instance, when she calls me a Baka, or uses chan or san wrong (I actually used to know how to use them right, dont anymore)

anyways, thats my opinion on the matter.

Ironically enough, Yonathen, I've heard the very same thing said about Japanese people who haven't been out of their own country yet have an insatiable interest in other countries.... like the UK, the US, or anywhere else that has cultural diversions which attracts them.

It's sad to say, but egocentrism isn't unique in this world of ours.

    damn i've been found out
Well to be honest, Kacchan and i have been doubting whether to post this here or the Asian Culture subforum.
I've tried to keep my act up, so as you can guess, most of this is nothing more than some things i scrambled together in a short amount of time (20 minutes to be exact)

Although i do think this way, i've exaggerated and if you read carefully, i swayed from one topic to another and didn't even gave a proper answer to the question why fangirls are disrespectful towards the Asian culture.

Although i did enjoy typing it, i just guess i'm no good when it comes to criticizing others.

Are we talking about 13 years old teenagers? Why don't you just tolerate them? It's not like they are trying to be disrespectful or anything, they just don't know. As Kataja said, stupidity does not equal disrespect. Maybe as they grow up they will forget about it and begin doing different hobbies, or maybe they'll be"enlightened" and become a full-grown, wise Otaku who knows what he/she talks about.

A fangirl is a fangirl until the thing they are a fan of disses them.

Say, if anyone person here was japanese, and they said that they speak for the japanese society when they say they hate wannabe-japs aka fangirls. they would stop trying to be japanese.

Was this intended as a serious topic, Yon? If it wasn't, I'd be very peeved (*hint hint*) you put it here, instead of.... say...... Chit-Chat, or under Asian Culture as you mentioned as having been on the fence about before.

    It's done.

Still, I find it amusing to listen to kids butcher a language or another culture's mindset. It just shows how stunningly ignorant they are still, and how far they have to go to actually do any growing up.

Seltzer, you should have seen how concerned Yon-kun was about how he would get thoroughly bashed for posting this. I had first thought of the Asian Culture subforum.

Also, we were working in tandem. I wrote, compiled and posted the intro while he was composing the actual message.
