In my blog on Tuesday I mentioned that a couple of high profile hits had made headlines in the NHL, coming as they did just before the GM meetings to discuss, among other things, how to deal with headshots.
Matt Cooke of the Pittsburgh Penguins slammed Marc Savard, the Boston Bruins forward, on Monday. His should hit on the Boston center is not going to be punished, despite causing a Grade 2 concussion with which Savard spent time in hospital after the game, and is now out of the game "indefinitely", probably for the rest of the season.
However, the GM meeting did highlight that under the rules that are being reviewed for next season, the shot would have been penalised with a possibility of a hefty suspension for the player delivering it.
So there you go. The game isn't going soft, but it is trying to look out for players. Next year, at any rate.
