During the Fall of 2008, a Danish documentary entitled "Mechanical Love", by Phie Ambo, was aired here in Finland. Some of the featured robots are quite similar in concept to Aiko here.

"Chobits" is a rather thought-provoking manga, and projects like Aiko show that it is about more than allegories and speculation. However, these android builders still have a long way to go before there is any danger of me having a crush on one of their creations.

Yesterday I started reading a book entitled "Love + Sex with Robots. The Evolution of Human-Robot Relationships" (ISBN 978-0-06-135975-0). It is a 334-page speculative study by David Levy, published 2007.

I have no idea whether I will have the patience to finish this book, but its mere existence is proof that Chobits are taken far more seriously than one might expect.

Really, that much should be obvious. Chobits was not necessarily original though, even if it did introduce some of you people to the concept of the whole, Robots with emotions/boundaries of what makes people human on a deeper level and or whatever else you would like to call it. The idea of loving one is also not a new concept. I seem to recall writings from much earlier going off of similar fantasies, (By gods it seems as if they were from the 60s but I cannot for the life of me remember.)

We should also take into consideration things such as the story of Pygmalion. Yes, the idea and setting differ vastly, but at the same time not so much. I feel the basis is indeed much the same. The old type of philosophical, "What is love?" So to ask, is love merely what you put into something with the desire of it being returned only heightening it? Are we not the only provokers of our own ability to love? We define beauty and attractive qualities on our own terms after all, and many times even superseding what nature has us instinctively recognize. Love is an incredibly greedy emotion after all, and I mean that about love in all forms.

Really with this in mind, I don't see how it's possible to not understand loving robots, dolls, statues, fictional characters, because so much of it is the way we perceive things and the responses we would like. (The responses being favourable, of course, stimulate us.

Well, I am using the designation Chobits as an icon for this type of robots (or computers) rather than saying "Chobits" were the original source.

I like to think that Clamp took manga-style robot love stories to a new level, though. If not, please name predecessors -- I would love to take a look at them.

The earliest robot love fantasy that I can remember is "Satisfaction Guaranteed" by Isaac Asimov, first published 1951. The Wikipedia article includes spoilers, you have been warned:

I would be surprised if Asimov had been the first science fiction author to touch the issue. More likely is he did it better than some forgotten paperback writers before him.

Pygmalion? Oh, thanks. The ancient Finnish folklore has a parallel story, "Ilmarinen's Bride of Gold". Seppo Ilmarinen is the half-god-like great blacksmith who crafted the dome of the sky, yet he is unable to create an artificial woman that could make him happy:

Thats kinda cool. I mean with the way technology is improving so rapidly, Id say within 5-7 years, we could very well be looking at something similar to chobits. I dont think id mind having my own personal, human like computer.

I wouldn't say 5-7. I would say it's somewhere more within the range of 20 - 35 years from now. Until we have major breakthroughs in Artificial Intelligence, then it's just a dream, for some to dream on, for others to dream about, and for a certain few to chase.

I do not think the main breakthroughs are needed within AI research. Come on, Chi is a fairy tale character, we are not expecting to see robots/computers simulating humans the way she does. Instead, I think current AI technology is already there to produce illusions comparable to the persocom Hideki's boss has*. Robotic body movement controls are what need to be developed a whole lot before that can be seen in 3D.
