    First Story

Alright so I got bored and one thing led to another and out popped this little story. Read it, lemme know whatcha think. Thanks!

    The Amethyst Warrior

He stood and looked to the sky. “Well, where do I go now?” He looked around at the destruction. He had been an officer to Lu Bu, but now that was over. Lu Bu was dead, and Diao Chan was gone. Zhang Liao joined with Cao Cao. “Is that it then? Do I side with another lord?” He sighed and looked to the few men who had escaped with him. There wasn’t many, but the ones left would serve him no matter the situation. They may as well have been bound together. One of his men approached him, “Zhuang Xan. What do the men want to do?” Xan cleared his throat and sat down. “Well, sir. They just want to make sure you’re going to be alright.” He looked at Xan, “Are you sure that’s all they want? Well, no matter. Make sure they know that this path could lead them to their deaths.” Xan walked to the men and they, in support of this man who had led them through all their battles, cheered out.

The man mounted up later that day and looked back at his men doing the same. None of them had left and all had pledged to follow him. He turned forward again and looked down before riding to his men. “Men! We go to battle! You have all served me well, and today we start carving our OWN Empire! We will take this land from the Wei and no one will stop us! For your children and for our peace!” At that, he turned and sped off, confident in his men. As soon as he was over the rise, the men departed. They all knew that they may not make it back from this, but they were determined. They watched as their leader met the first guard and cut him down and they followed suit. They had managed to catch them by surprise and cut a large amount of the enemy down before the defenses were organized. They were holding their own and were deep into the enemies’ camp. Their leader was facing off against Cao Xiu, the person Cao Cao had put in charge of this land.

“I am Shui Ce!” He cried out as he charged Cao Xiu and his personal guards. “I have come to take this land from you!” One of the guards killed Ce’s mount and it crashed down, with Ce rolling to his feet. Xiu laughed, “No advantage now, Ce.” He advanced with his guards, confident that they would crush this man. Ce stepped back and ripped off his cloak revealing his glistening armor. “I need no advantage! I am the Amethyst Warrior and I will slay you where you stand, Cao Xiu!” With those words, he threw the spear he had carried at Xiu and by some chance it pierced Xiu's abdomen. Ce rushed up quickly and withdrew it in a long sweep taking the feet out from under Xiu's guards. He then steeled his gaze at Xiu, “Now you die!” he yelled as he stabbed down. The last thing Cao Xiu ever saw was the glint of light purple from Ce’s armor.

With the death of Cao Xiu the battle was won and everyone cheered. The men from Wei retreated, but it wasn’t over. Ce went to his men and ordered the defenses prepared. Wei would come back for this land, he knew. “I’ve got time though, even more so now that I’m home again.”

Am I in Sekigahara? I didn't see myself put that in. If I did, I didn't mean to. That's in Samurai Warriors. >.<

Edit: I'm such a dork. I thought you meant in the story, heh. Yes I've heard of the battle. I put it because it's one of those little things that I like about Samurai Warriors 2.

Been a while since I read a good DW fanfic...while I can't say it's as good as "Legacy of the Lunar Halbard,"* don't take that the wrong way that's no insult, in fact your fanfic is definently very good and I look forward to reading more. I give it an 8 out of 10**. However, I see that rank going up if you continue.

    * -Legacy of the Lunar Halbard- a fanfic by "Harbor Rat" focusing on Lu Ling Qi, Lu Bu's daughter, and covering from Hu Lao Gate to the Battle of Guan Du. Roughly 20 Chapters, average 7 pages a chapter. This is the standard on my scale...my "10 out of 10" and all others are rated against it. My Personal Favorite Fanfic.

** -Rating- rating in comparison to best fanfic I've read (see above). A scale of 1 to 10, 10 being the best. I consider it Crap until it's a 2, at 3 it's poor, 3.5 to 5 is okay, 5.5 up to 8 is good 8.5 to 9.5 is great, 10 is AMAZING, above that and the scale adjusts to new top rank. The average rank is around 6.5 or 7. After reading "Lunar Halbard" the previous 10 dropped to an 8.5.

Well, I hope somebody likes this addition to my story. Again, was bored.

    Defensive Preparation

Shui Ce sat upon the ground, looking about. His men were around him and most of them had taken off their armor and weapons in favor of mobility as they built. The people of the village realized that their fighting men had returned and ousted the men from Wei and morale was high. Everyone was building something, whether it was a wall, tower, trap, or something else. Ce had tried to help in the beginning but his officers forced him to lounge about and think up defensive plans. He glared at Zhuang Xan, one of his officers that had forced him to plan. Xan caught the glare and merely smiled, understanding that it had no anger behind it.

“Alright, so we are all agreed. Archers will take up positions here, here, and here.” He pointed to spots on the map of the surrounding land and the village, whose fortifications were turning out quite well. “Also, I want at least forty capable riders and fighters to take horses out into the countryside and maintain vigil around where they set up. Not too far out, mind you. I want reinforcements at hand in case I need a trick. Hmm… The reeds over here are quite thick, yes? I think some men can lay in them with reeds on top of them and hide. They should be armed with a short sword and a spear or naginata. Something with good reach anyway. They will be a nasty surprise for any cavalry the enemy throws at us.” The officers all nodded, then one named Gongsun Bu spoke up. “Sir, I believe there’s only one thing you’ve forgotten. How long can we hold out against the Wei army before we are surrounded and crushed?” Ce smiled and turned to his officer. “Bu, do not worry. We will only be along for a little while. Both the Wu and the Shu wish to keep Wei away from this territory. I have sent messengers to both of them, asking if they would give us aid. I expect an answer within a few days. We only need to hold against the Wei for a small period of time.” With that, the men picked up their things and headed home. It had been a long day and it was time to rest, but Ce swung by the complete towers and walls to make sure sentries were there and ready to alert everyone to an attack. Ce then went to his own home and went to sleep, still fully armored with his swords by his side.

At dawn, he was awoken by cries such as “Look!” “Someone’s coming!” and so forth. Thinking it was an attack, he rushed out to be met by his officers. They said that they had received one messenger from the lands of Shu and that this man approaching now had a symbol of Wei and a symbol of peace with him. Ce wished to speak with the messenger he had sent, but knew he would have to meet this man from Wei first. He walked to the gates, noting that they were sturdy but needed reinforcing and met the man around twenty yards out.

The man began to speak after bowing slightly, which Ce returned stiffly, “Shui Ce, we are aware of your attack on our lands and the slaying of Cao Xiu. We are willing to accept a surrender if you will join with us and help us to conquer other provinces.” Shui Ce was astonished that they would even believe that he would join with him. They had taken his home by force, killed his general, and caused the deaths of many of his men that he viewed as family. He glared at the messenger, then checked his anger and stated, “We want nothing to do with Wei and we will kill any army Wei wishes to send against us. We are not afraid of Wei’s might.” With this, Ce turned and stroded back towards camp, noting that he saw movements along the treeline just east of where he met the messenger. He knew that the attack would come soon after the messenger returned and he rushed through the town, inspecting everything. They had to be ready, or everything would be for naught.

After much hard work, the small village had managed to reinforce its meager defenses. They could hold off the enemy for quite some time so long as they did not view it necessary to send castle siege weaponry along. They had archers atop the towers, and the roofs of building. Archers were also placed on a few hills by the town where they could slow an enemy’s march. They also had the veterans that knew more about fighting with them to buy them time when it came to close quarters. They were to retreat if the enemy closed. The horsemen were already dispatched and the men were laying in wait in the tall grass. Finally, the attack came. It was a force of at least eight hundred men and around a hundred of them were on horseback. Ce flashed a signal to the horsemen, telling them the attack had arrived and to stand ready. Ce then went to the gates and picked up a bow. The archer group out towards the army was pulled back a little earlier then Ce wanted, but they would have easily been run down by those horsemen. The horsemen soon closed and the first volley was loosed. None of the enemy dropped, but a couple were dismounted as their horses went down. Ce loosed an arrow at the lead horsemen, taking him in the shoulder and throwing him from his mount. “Aim for the riders!” was commonly heard being yelled out, as the horseman hacked at the crude barricades set up. The barricades were made of wood, but tall enough to prevent the horses from jumping them. They quickly went down and they had only lost two or three men. Those without horses ran towards the village. The main body had split into two forces, one swinging to the west and towards Ce’s reinforcements.

Ce kept a close eye on the second group, fearing they might know of his reinforcements and he dropped his bow. The melee had begun near him and he rushed into the fray, a clearing of enemies wherever he went. The enemy horsemen had managed to, for the most part, and Ce deemed these men to be important to eliminate. As he found this area of the wall to be holding well, even with the horsemen, he ran off to where he heard yells of despair. He lit the signal fire nearest the thicker fighting of the second group and summoned the reinforcements. He joined the fray, and after ten minutes of fighting, the cavalry showed up, and cut down a large amount of the enemy from the back. The enemy horsemen were called for with a horn and the horsemen charged away from where they were and headed, by sheer luck, right through the ambush. These men had been determined to wait until called for and were rewarded as they saw the enemy cavalry. They raised their spears and polearms and the like and many horses and riders impaled themselves upon these weapons. A good thirty horsemen rode through the ambush and engaged Ce’s cavalry which had around the same number. Ce retreated back into the village for a moment to make sure they were holding on all sides and was informed of a third group approaching the way of the ambush site. He ordered those men to lay down and wait for the next group, telling the first two ranks to not worry about their spears and to quickly draw their swords. He went back inside and rallied some men behind him to meet this new force, with the spearmen. The group closed quickly, having been mounted upon fast steeds and the ambush sprung again, the first few ranks took many casualties, but held nonetheless and Ce issued forth with twenty more men, Zhuang Xan and Gongsun Bu included, and all of them on horseback.

The battle grew fierce quickly with both sides taking many casualties. Suddenly Ce heard Xan yell and turned quickly. What Ce could only believe was the general, wielding a large mace in one hand, of the enemy was bearing down upon a wounded Gongsun Bu. Bu looked to have taken two arrows to his leg, and Ce charged at the general, quickly, trying to intercept. “Face me, coward!” The general slowed, and stopped lining up with Ce, grinning malevolently. “You think yourself a horseman, Shui Ce?” The man practically spat out those words and charged Ce. Ce quickly spurred his horse on and met the man mid-charge, and was knocked from his mount by the force of the man’s blow. He fell to the ground with a loud thud and then rose, slowly. The man had lined up for another charge and spurred his horse at Ce, who barely rolled in time. Ce came up by an enemy soldier and slashed the legs from under the horse, knocking the man down. The general had started to charge again, and Ce, thinking quickly, grabbed the man from the horse he had just felled and threw him into the general’s horse.

The man tangled in the legs of the animal, causing it to fall and the general managed to land on his feet. He discarded the hammer he had been using, and drew a long sword from his back. Ce had both his swords out in a defensive posture and grinned, thinking that there was no way this man was more skilled than him at the sword. Ce called out, “What is your name?!” The man laughed loudly, and grinned again. “My name? I am Akra Wei!” He started to charge, quickly, leaving Ce little time to react. Ce caught the first swing with ease, both his blades crossing to meet it and throw it back. He then launched a double thrust of his own, and the man jumped back. The fighting intensified around them, Ce’s forces keeping Wei’s at bay more easily, now. Ce shook his head, concentrating on Wei. Wei charged in again, swinging low this time. Ce turned one of his blades down to catch the blow, but was pushed back from the recoil of the swing and stumbled, falling backwards. A sword that light and fast, and yet with so much power, surprised Ce greatly and would have cost him his life if Wei had not turned his attention to the bigger battle. Ce jumped up and took a slash at Wei, who jumped back, swinging his sword to catch Ce’s. He smiled, “You will survive this day Ce, but soon you will be slain and then we will take this land from your people and kill them all.” With that, he turned, and jumped upon the horse of one of his men, ordering the retreat.

Ce blinked for a moment then looked back to see that Shu had sent a force only a day behind his messenger. Riding at the front was Ma Su, one of the Shu tacticians. Ce gathered his men and met them at the center of the village. “Ma Su, it is an honor.” Ce cowed formally to Su. Su returned the bow and looked around. “I am told these were your battle plans and I must say I’m impressed. Do you come from another army?” Ce frowned slightly, knowing that neither Wei, Shu, or Wu had liked Lu Bu or his master, Dong Zhou. “I come from another army that was defeated. I was an officer there, and these men were my responsibility. They still are.” Su smiled warmly and dismounted. “Well, do not worry. Shu will assist you and help to repel Wei so long as you will assist us.” Ce nodded, and then turned to show Su around the village, and ask his advice to strengthen the defenses. They had a lot of work ahead.
