In case your definition is based on biology, and only biology. We could also use social roles as a starting point, and then gender can have less to do with one's biological sex.
The first times I heard the word
gender, I simply rejected it as a new piece of humbug.
Later, having studied some sociolinguistics as well as sexual minority questions, I have started using the word in certain contexts. I even appreciate having it in my vocabulary.
But do I need
sex or
gender in everyday conversations? Nope. I prefer questions with "man or woman", "female or male", and so on.
