All I know is that the new Intel Centrino processors consume less power then older processors and many of the competition (good for laptops)
And the best Intel currently has to offer for desktops are the Core 2 Extreme processors. (good for Highdefenition playback, great surroundsound support, all while multitasking.)
Though all I know of AMd processors is that (back around the year 2000 anyway) AMD processors where cheaper and gave better preformance, but I don't know how it is these days.
Ok, I just looked up a few interesting articles about AMD vs Intel and came to this conclusion.
Intel's Core 2 Duo E6400 vs AMD's Athlon 64 X2 5600
AMD + 10 EU = +200 Mhz
AMD better compressing (rar files and the like) and photoshop (due to intergrated memory in the CPU)
Intel less powerconsumption during high and medium preformance
AMD less power consumptuin during no and small preformance
Intel best for coding and transcoding video and audio
All in all, I think AMD wins.
