Besides, you are your own worst critic. This is almost a universal truth. Imagine how others are thinking bad about themselves. That cool guy you meet may secretly have certain insecurities. That outgoing girl has insecurities too. They won't flat out tell you their insecurities, they keep it to themselves.

You're kinda right though... I myself am quite fond of the analogy used in Fruits Baskets. People are like Onigiri (Riceballs). They look in the mirror, and all they see is themselves. Just plain, white rice. But when they look around at other people, they see the Umiboshi (the little 'jewel' of some kind of food or something to make Onigiri more interesting and flavorful.) on everyone's back. But they cant see their own back, so they think they arent special.

What, you guys don't watch TV? Why not watch some anime with her and especially an episode where a character confesses to the other or admits he/she likes another.

Why not? I took my (now) wife on a road trip, because I expressed my liking of road trips. It was a short 2 hour trip to a nice romantic view of a river in the middle of the country. Then I busted a move. (by this time I already knew what she looked for in a man and knew it was a low risk move. And I was right!)
