While this has become a mecha recommendation thread (minus Gundam since Betong hates it) I'll fulfill your request the best I can.
Simon and his older-brother figure, Kamina live underground where Kamina inspires the dream of reaching the surface in Simon. When a giant Ganmen (a mech like nothing you've seen) crashes through the ceiling, their chance comes with Simon's earlier discovery, a small, faced mech that is later named Lagann. They are joined by a surface-dwelling human, Yoko who explains that they are fighting for survival against the Beastmen who control the surface. So starts the story of resistance and discovery of destiny for the three characters. There's my promo off the top of my head.
