b4 shrinking stuff crop it. If it is initially really big use the resize wizard to shrink it down a great deal after you crop off what you want to use. After you do that go to filter>sharpen>sharpen more or just sharpen
assuming you are using photoshop I mean. On the layer of the image push ctr-t on the keyboard to free transform the image then you can shrink it or whatever at will. You can use this method without cropping or using the resize wizard but only if it's not really huge. I dont crop though. I use the square marque tool to highlight the selection then I copy the selection and paste it on to whatever im going to use it on. Then I use the free transform tool(ctr-t) on it to reshape it then sharpen if I need to

I forgot to mention. When you are resizing anything using transform holding shift will keep the perspective correct so it wont look stretched
