Naru says Tama-chan is girl in volume 4, and no one really went against that, so I guess no one really knows...but doesn't Tama have a girl's anatomy?

That's just what Naru thinks. The only one who knows if it is a girl or a boy is Mutsumi. And BTW, I don't think Ken Akamatsu would put... Uhm... a girl Turtle who loves girls in his manga. Most probulary a boy. So, I'm sure Tama is a boy, because he fell in love with Motoko in one episode.

why not? it's a shonen manga And in the English translation at least, Kaolla references Naru and Motoko at lovers at one point, and various first kisses are between the girls. Not to mention Kitsune's 'other-teamly tendencies' scene with Toko-chan at the festival

So, in that climate, a turtle who likes Motoko is perfectly normal
