Religion Class In School
After reading a news story off the drudge report (http://www.woai.com/news/local/story...1-E048F9EECDBC), I was wondering what everyone thought about teaching religion in a public school.
This issue has come up a lot lately since a Deleware *I THINK* case involving evolution versus "Intelligent Design" (which is in fact a whole lot like the creationism theory) I personally don't see much of a problem with it if it's an elective course because if you look at it, the Bible *is* a literary work. But by playing devil's advocate, i can see though how some people would not want their tax dollars going to something affiliated with religion.

We already have religion taught in public schools in the USA.
The issue is not whether religion should be taught in government schools, but rather if government is to be neutral to religion or promote one over another. What we have is the government promoting a religion. And it is not Christianity. |

Uh, I'm not too familiar with many schools that teach religion... catholic schools or things of that nature maybe. Anyway, I think religion should be kept out of schools. There's too many different religions... imagine a mixed public school. Parents would get worked up about it and would schools really incorporate every religion? No way.

The problem is that seperation of church and state does not mean that we should replace one religion with another as the government's official religion. Government will always have its own religion, the debate is always about which one.
http://old.heraldextra.com/modules.p...icle&sid=72013 Rather, the government should be neutral toward religion. That is the correct way of seeing "seperation of Church and state" |

Depends on which 'religion' is which. If one religion is taught, then ALL the religions have to be taught. Too much red tape. So if you want your kid to practice a certain religion in school, send them to a certain school that does. Same thing for church and state.

^ Agreed... separate schools are just fine. I had to go to religion class every Tuesday night until the day of my Confirmation. That's where people went to learn about God and whatnot. Then came normal school where religion played no major role whatsoever. No problems there as far as I can see.

You have never been taught evolution? Or the big bang theory? If yes, you were taught religious dogma that everything came from nothing without God. This is a tenet of atheism, the official state religion. |

Teaching ALL religions in a public High School would be really hard to do....but I don't really see a problem though if you aren't FORCED to take it. If you're Jewish or Muslim or whatever you affiliate with (if you affiliate at all), then just don't take the class.

Science isn't a religion. It teaches you factual things, not some bullshit myths.
I don't think they should teach religion in public schools. You wanna teach religion, form your own ****ing school, like the Catholics do.

A good example: the belief that things came from nothing This is exactly what is being taught in "science" class. The Big Bang Theory basically says "there was nothing. there was an explosion. there was stuff." Can this be scientifically replicated? No. This is 100% an item of faith. The explosion is basically their God. And it is being taught as "science" With this nonsense being taught, you might as well teach creationism. All we're doing is substituting another "God" instead of an explosion, it is a creator. And religion is not "bull**** myths" - that's bigotry against religion. Face it. Religion is taught in public (government run) schools. They just tap dance around it. |

Theology is a theory. Spread the word! I created the- Bobby's got it down.
So now we have to teach how every religion thinks the world was created? Better to teach a 'scientific theory' than something involving actual religion. |

Schools are not supposed to be religion free zones, they can't be, for the government will always have its own religion. Schools can be neutral toward religion, that's fine. But when one religion is promoted while another is outlawed, that's unconstitutional. Besides, a basic "creationism" can be taught which covers most religions. |
