Hi all!

As you know, I am pretty much a Shinobu fan like I am a Love Hina fan.

I have noticed one little thing in the episodes were Shinobu and SU travel to another place in Japan... This episode:



I am sure you remember that!

I am also sure that you know a very famous fairy tale writer, called "H.C. Andersen" ~ (Hans Christian Andersen). He is from Denmark, were I am from too. Maybe you already know what I am about to tell you.

I have noticed that there is a fairy tale in that episode.. And that is from the fairy tale: The Little Match Girl

Think about it! That fairy tale have travelled all the way from Denmark to Japan.. Thats pretty cool

Big Bad Wolf: Come closer, Kawaii Red Riding Hood..

Shinobu: Auuuu..

Motoko: Shinmei-Ryu, Zagan-zen, ZAN KUU ZEN!

BobCat: *whips out gun* Eat lead scumbag! *BANG* *BANG* *BANG*

Both his bullets and her famous attack hit the Big Bad Wolf hard.

Wolf: AAAAAAAAAARRRRRRRRRGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!

He dies on the spot.

Shinobu: Thank you BobCat-sempai, Motoko senpai! *bow*

Yes, you are right. Maybe Ken mixed up those two fairy tales?

What do you mean by his creativity was not very high? I think he has a great creativity.... Just think about all those funny Vehicles in the series.. And just about the STORY. That is creativity

Oh. The Little Match Girl thing was so obvious to me I did not even make a point out of it when reading the manga. To me, the Andersen fairy tale belongs to international top fairy tale classics, and many Japanese mangaka seem to be quite aware of such European works.

The idea of Shinobu as a match seller was so heartbreakingly kawaii, though, that it once inspired a little (non-Love-Hina) story I wrote in Finnish.

Somehow I had missed the Little Red Riding Hood reference. Now that I read it from you, it is obvious. Googling for Match Girl illustrations, I see that she may have a hood or something red as part of her outfit, but not necessarily either.

Believe me: the mix-up is a conscious fan service device. The red outfit is beautiful and draws attention, while the match-seller role appeals to your feelings.

And the matchboxes were Made in Molmol!!

Conscious fanservice device. If you take the Red Riding Hood route, you'd want to eat Shinobu up If you saw the HCA reference, you'd want Shinobu to light your fire

This outfit obviously does draw sympathy and attention. A person so down on her luck as to stand in the street and sell boxes of (quality, MolMol) matches has to be desparate. This appeals to some salarymen, who feel the need to help someone else

The mixup seems to have been welcome, as it's made its appeal a little wider than might otherwise have been the case. Shinobu looking that cute would have stirred a reaction either way though, even if you failed to get either reference.
