I have noticed that there is a bit of confusion about what Genres certain games fall under thus I present to you The Guide To game Genres, created through my own knowledge and my good friend wikiapedia. It also allows me to errect a monument to my new mod powers
Adventure Games
A genre of video game typified by exploration, puzzle-solving, interaction with game characters, and a focus on narrative rather than reflex-based challenges. The vast majority of adventure games are computer games, though console-based adventure games are not unheard of. . Adventure games encompass a wide variety of literary genres, including fantasy, science fiction, mystery, horror, and comedy. Notable adventure games include Zork, King's Quest, The Secret of Monkey Island, and Myst.
First-person shooter (FPS)
A genre of computer and video games, which is characterized by an on-screen view that simulates the in-game character's point of view. Notable examples of the genre include Doom, Quake, Unreal, Half-Life, and Halo. While this is considered a subgenre it seems that the majority of the shooters that come now now days are FPS thus I don't regard it a sub genre
RPG
Originally derived from traditional role-playing games, suchas Dungeons & Dragons, and use both the settings and game mechanics found in such games. The stories usually involve a group of characters who have joined forces in order to accomplish a mission or quest. Along the way, the adventurers must face a great number of challenges and enemies .Characters develop through the investment of points gained through killing enemies into certain skill areas such as health or pickpocketing, examples of such games are the majority of the Final Fantasy Series, Knights Of The Old Republic and Diablo
Platformers
Platform game, is a video game genre characterized by the character having to climb up and down, or jump from and to, platforms and ledges, while fighting enemies and collecting objects required to complete the game.Often, the player has the ability to gain powers or weapons, called power-ups. Generally, platform games, due to their unrealistic nature, have cartoon-like graphics. Characters in platform games are usually based on legendary creatures (e.g. dragons and goblins) or anthropomorphic animals (e.g. a gorilla who rolls barrels).
Real Time Strategy
Real-time strategy (RTS) is a genre of computer games characterised by being a real-time wargamein which one exerts direct control over individual units, resource gathering, base building and technology development. They don't involve "turns" like conventional turn-based strategy video or board games. Rather, game time progresses in "real time": that is, it is continuous rather than turn-by-turn. Examples of such games are Age Of Empires Series, Empire Earth and Cossacks
Turn-Based Strategy
Turn-based strategy, is a game where the game flow is partitioned into well-defined and visible parts, called turns or rounds. For example, when the game flow unit is time, turns represent units of time, like years, months, weeks, or days. A player of a turn-based game is allowed a period of analysis before committing to a game action, ensuring a separation between the game flow and the thinking process, which in turn leads presumably to better solutions. Once every player has taken his turn, that round of play is over, and any special shared processing, is done. This is followed by the next round of play.eg Civilsation series
A Sim
A simulation game, or sim game is a game that contains a mixture of skill, chance, and strategy to simulate an aspect of reality. These levels of reality have more emphesis put upon them than other games. Examples of such games are the Sim's, city building games such as sim city and Zeus and flight and racing simulators such as MS filght simulator and Grand Tursimo
yes this is not a complete list but should serve for now for those who are unsure about which genre a certain game falls under
