Currently XP, but will get 7 cos my lappy BSOD'd from a virus or something and parents decided to have me upgrade instead of fix the problem. New Toshiba Laptop in my hands sometime next week.

The infamously terrible Vista, of course. <: I miss XP but I've had Vista for about a year now. I have far too much on my computer to reinstall XP. Sigh.

Upgrade to 7, then? It feels like a soft fluffy mattress after the bed of curiously sharp rusty nails that is Vista.

Windows 7 has been much better received, even though it's actually Windows 6.1 (Vista, new and improved!), so Microsoft have not moved on from Vista, do not want to be told that they released a rush job and should have put more thought into it, but are happy to take our money when upgrading

    Strangely... XP is Windows 5.1

We've got Win7 on a few machines at work now, and it's quite happy. My place usually has problems due to the complexity of the stuff we put into the CAD software to do our designs, but we've steered clear of Vista (and it took us a long while to make the jump to XP too...) and are considering going straight to 7.

    Backups, Chey!

Surely the fact that XP is 5.1 is reason enough not to write off 7 for being a patch-job? Clearly Microsoft work best under consumer pressure.

overall windows = horrible. If i could play games on linux distros, I wouldn't have it at all. Dumb developers, they should dump directX and focus on openGL

my understanding of the topic is pants. I do know that there are functional differences in how the two APIs work, but not what they are or why they could be problems. OpenGL is obviously not tied to any particular language, being so open and cross-platform, so I would have thought there'd be more scope to work with.

XP is a patch job that people persevered with. We had many compatibility issues for the longest time on our CAD software at work, so it took us a while to adopt it, but it's come to be a system we love and loathe.

yes o_O that's Microsoft's best operating system bar none Massive improvements over the creaky and difficult NT, and laden with promise. It was a good leap forward, and wasn't flashy with graphical touches, either. All the money on Vista and 7 went on making things transparent and shiny, as far as I can tell. I don't think I have a bad word to say about 2k.

Also helps that there's a very hot OS-tan with it too

    I quite like Windows 7.

But anyways, Wiindows all the way. Microsoft may be evil, but lets face it. Only on Windows can one truly play video games outside of consoles. Macs are only good for work.

Linux is only good for servers, but make damn good servers

    I have a dual-boot XP + Vista

I installed Vista for directx10 features and general aero interface coolness, XP for compatibility.

I have to say it, Vista is not too bad when you have 4 gigs of RAM and whenever you find an app that doesn't run properly on Vista you can just reboot and install it on the XP side =P

The great Vista problems are memory sucking and compatibility I think, so this has been a viable workaround for me until now.

When I have some spare time I think I'll reformat and install windows 7 since they say it's so much better. I also have heard that the 7 has a buit in feauture that emulates XP perfectly for incompatible programs?
