    Just quote it!

Have you ever finished reading a book and one, tiny, particular sentence was the only thing you could remember afterwards? Have you ever gotten so addicted to a given witty comeback you're considering tattooing in large, bold letters, hoping more people will fall in love with it? Here's the place where you can achieve that without resorting to such extreme methods! Share the experience, be it humorous, saddening or just plain awesome!

Oh, and don't forget to refer what the book and author you took it from is.

    Allow me to begin:

""I meant," said Ipslore bitterly, "what is there in this world that truly makes living worthwhile?"
    Death thought about it.
"Cats," he said eventually. "Cats are nice.""

    Terry Pratchett, Sourcery

One day, God loomed over His Earth and proclaimed, for the whole world to hear: "Let there be a single, faultless speck of light on this plane; One which will happily glint undisturbed forevermore...", and as His strained voice echoed throughout the entire Universe, He uttered just one last sentence, decisive and final:
    "Let there be NODOKA!"

well, yeah, I only used "phrase" as an example. Basically choose a small excerpt or paragraph, or phrase you particularly enjoyed in a book of your choice and post it here!

so why aren't you following your own thread rules? I know where the quote is from, and I thought you wanted people to guess

That quote's from Sourcery, yes? Ipslore the Red talking to Death?

One of my favourite Discworld quotes was from Detritus, in Feet of Clay:

'Dis is police brutality . . .' Igneous muttered.
'No, dis is just police shoutin'!' yelled Detritus. 'You want to try for brutality it okay wit' me!'

Woops!O__O f*fixed* I...was kinda tired when I created this thread, my apologies.

I wouldn't have put it better myself! It's refreshing to see you still know your Discworld.

Truly epic, that one! I'm afraid I still haven't read FoC, though...

Well, now that the topic is clarified, and since I don't want this to be a Terry Pratchett only thread, I'll contribute with something completely different, this time:

"I know what you want. You want a story that won’t surprise you. That will confirm what you already know. That won’t make you see higher or further or differently.”

The Life of Pi, Yann Martel

hard to be a Pratchett-only thread over time, but with me being such an avid reader, I'll likely throw several quotes from his work in there Of course I know my Discworld. I certainly know as much about the Death of the Disc as I think there is to know without actually being Terry Pratchett

Here's another. Not my favourite line of Richard Sharpe, but the best I can quote in full at present:

Sharpe snapped the silver-headed cane in two and tossed the broken fragments onto [the disgraced Colonel] Girdwood's lap. "Get up, sir, and bugger off."

    Sharpe's Regiment, by Bernard Cornwell

“If people lived forever - if they never got any older - if they could just go on living in this world, never dying, always healthy, do you think they’d bother to think hard about things, the way we’re doing now? I kinda think if there was no such thing as death, that complicated thoughts and ideas like that would never come into the world.” - The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle, Haruki Murakami

“Taking one’s chances is like taking a bath, because sometimes you end up feeling warm and comfortable, and sometimes there is something terrible lurking around that you cannot see until it is too late and you can do nothing else but scream and cling to a plastic duck.” — Lemony Snicket

"I always wished I could be a Russian Doll. A red one. With a big pair of bright blue eyes and painted on eyelashes and pink rosy cheeks. Really rosy. And my mouth would be painted on red like a bow. I’d have a flower on my chest - a rose - and two small little hands by my side. And then I could be unwrapped, two, three, four times until I was small. Really small." - Skins

"Once the game is over, the King and the pawn go back in the same box." — Italian proverb

"Don't fight what's gone. Don't look for reasons, because that serves no purpose and it ruins things. Move on." — Susan Retcher

"Hello. My name is Inigo Montoya. You killed my father. Prepare to die."
    — William Goldman, The Princess Bride

The Queen's Pride was his ship, and he loved her. (That was the way his sentences always went: It is raining today and I love you. My cold is better and I love you. Say hello to Horse and I love you. Like that.)"
    — William Goldman, The Princess Bride

"A person who has good thoughts cannot ever be ugly. You can have a wonky nose and a crooked mouth and a double chin and stick-out teeth, but if you have good thoughts they will shine out of your face like sunbeams and you will always look lovely." - Roald Dahl, The Twits

I don't know why, but I really like that one.

"What worries you, masters you. " - Haddon W. Robinson

"The problems of the world cannot possibly be solved by skeptics or cynics whose horizons are limited by the obvious realities. We need men who can dream of things that never were." - John Keats

"Let me be, was all I wanted. Be what I am, no matter how I am." - Henry Miller

"If people were always kind and obedient to those who are cruel and unjust, the wicked people would have it all their own way; they would never feel afraid, and so they would never alter, but grow worse and worse. When we are struck without a reason, we should strike back again very hard; I am sure we should - so hard as to teach the person who struck us never to do it again." - C. Bronte

aren't we supposed to name the book the quote's from, too?

From Sharpe's Rifles, by Bernard Cornwell:

    Sharpe: Gimme a pick-lock, Cooper.
Cooper: Pick-lock, sir? Catch me with a pick-lock!
Harper: They did, Coop. But when you got out of Newgate prison, you got another set, and that's the one the officer wants.
Cooper: Do I get it back, sir?
    Sharpe: Trust me.
Cooper: It's very hard to trust a man who wants to borrow your pick-lock, sir.
