My favourite book is "Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrel". In 16 years of reading, I am sure that was the best.

Dune, dune, dune, dune, dune, dune, specifically the 4th book by Frank.
The most merciful thing in the world, I think, is the inability of the human mind to correlate all its contents. We live on a placid island of ignorance amidst the black seas of infinity; and it was not meant that we should stray far.

Probably my favorite novel would be Don Quixote, by Miguel de Cervantes. It's been a good few years since last I read it, though.

I've read the first 4 HP books, and the major LotR books. I've only heard of His Dark Materials, and the Red Dwarf series is new to me.

I used to read a lot more than I do.

well, i loved all the books in the Dragonlance series written by Margaret Weiss and Tracy Hickman, i think those occupy the top of my list...
Other than those, there are the Harry Potters, Inkheart and Inkspell (and probably Inkdeath, when it comes out) by Cornelia Funke, and the Artemis Fowl books by Eoin Colfer.
One day, God loomed over His Earth and proclaimed, for the whole world to hear: "Let there be a single, faultless speck of light on this plane; One which will happily glint undisturbed forevermore...", and as His strained voice echoed throughout the entire Universe, He uttered just one last sentence, decisive and final:
    "Let there be NODOKA!"
