This is the Discworld, world and mirror of worlds...

For, as the world tumbles lazily, it is revealed as the Discworld - flat, circular, and carried though space on the back of four giant elephants who stand on the back of the Great A'tuin, the only turtle ever to feature on the Hertzsprung-Russell diagram, a turtle ten thousand miles long, dusted with the frost of dead comets, meteor-pocked, albedo eyed...

Anyone else think this is a joy of a series?

It's the best series I think I've ever read, and I have read each book as many times as possible... okay, maybe one or two I've had to borrow and can't find...

Ever since I turned the page for The Colour of Magic for the first time and started on my epic journey around a world that is, basically, a geological pizza, I've been hooked.

Are there any other fans of Terry Pratchett's masterpiece on here?

I've only been able to read a few, but I loved the ones I've read. So imaginative, and it takes the micky out of somethings in a way that really should have been done countless times over but never is ^^ Pratchet = Genius.

The first one I ever read, I believe, is Soul Music. It was great.

Remember the Discworld games? Man they were a bit of a bish to get through, but funny as hell

I've enjoyed Pratchett since about 5 or 6 years ago, when I bought "Mort". The Death books are a joy to read, not to mention the Lancre and Guards ones. Yes, Pratchett takes the Mickey out of anything and everything, to good effect. If you like your fantasy mixed with good comedy, he comes greatly recommended

it's so tough to pick a favourite 'series'... The Death books are hilarious, because of the anthropomorphic personification himself (particularly SM "OH. BUGG-... *booom*" ), the Watch books are excellent, and for one reason: Sam Vimes. And to a slightly lesser extent, Detritus The witch series rules, too. All the Lancre lives playing out before you and the coven sticking their noses in wherever and whenever it's least welcome (pretty much everywhere and all the time ) Not to mention the more 'standalone' books... Small Gods, Moving Pictures, Pyramids, The Truth, Monstrous Regiment...

And then we come to Rincewind. Never in the course of human history has one man been so beset by so many problems an innate predisposition to failing magic or a crouching start can solve

At different points in time different series crop up as my favourite But presently, I think the fact that the Luggage (the most belligerent, murderous travel accessory yet encountered on the Disc) is present makes the Rincewind series my current favourite

I've heard about the rest of the Death book. I want so very much to read them ^^ Death is absolutely hilarious. Susan was decent, loved her ability to make people not notice her (Which is a pisstake of the way some people in real life tend to not be noticed)

It's all so well done ^^

Considering everything I've heard about this series, it seems like another group of entries to add to my ever-growing list of books to read.

Indeed Hinarei the books are a joy to read and why they can't be said to be the pinnacle of literature they are still some of the best books out there if you simply want to be entertained.

it's a cracking line, is that Wow, Ederius, you arrived late!

you started reading them in order yet? Discworld started out with Colour of Magic, which ran on into The Light Fantastic, and then took on a new story with Equal Rites, branched again with Mort...

But after you've laid some groundwork for characters, you kind of need to get into some sort of order. A few of the witch books are okay out of order, but you do lose your thread sometimes. Death books usually work out of order.

Fifth Elephant was a wonderful read. All the political intrigue surrounding a mysterious and hitherto only obliquely referenced area of the Disc... o_O

And yes, Flash. Terry Pratchett is not the pinnacle of literature. But he's my favourite author, and that's all that matters to the reader, eh?

Going Postal's the latest in the series (okay, a new one is emerging soon), but that one was a slow burn for me. Most of Pratchett's novels are slow starters, with a couple of set pieces in the first few pages. I got used to Ankh Morpork, and was usually at home with stories that kicked off there. This one though... I thought I wouldn't like it

Never give up on a book. While not his best (in my opinion), Going Postal represents a fine insight into the workings of Pratchett's narrative. And is bloody good fun too

Soul Music is top notch. I'm not joking, but everyone read that in school People who wouldn't be seen dead in a library normally, picked up the book and wouldn't let it go. Ook

    [action=hinarei]waits patiently for next paperback...[/action]

    ***{BUMP}***

I just read a Discworld tome for the first time in yonks. I'd not set aside time for reading anything but newspapers or technical books in a few months and suddenly thought... "Thud".

I picked up the book of the same name, and started reading...

motored through it in less than 2 days over a Sunday and Monday, eschewing my usual newspapery association for the whole of Monday.

Was a joy, and now I have a problem. Do I miss out my daily belt of news and get back into reading books again like I used to? Or do I spend 50p per day on a Standard that I read just for the sport, columns and editorial?

Terry Pratchett's discworld books are pretty good. As already said, they have an excellent sense of humor and a certain magic to them.

One of the best things about his books though, is the fact that they never quite end how you would expect. There's always a strange twist or something you weren't prepared for; but it always fits in perfectly with the tone of the story.

I haven't read a lot yet though, mainly any I can find about Sam Vimes and Monstrous Regiment. I think i've also read one about time....

(Books are better than newspapers for the record. )

Thief of Time, yah? Was excellent. Remember Rule One

Books are generally more interesting than newspapers but when they're about newspapers, they're even better than that Who's read The Truth?

I love the Vimes books. He's the most angry, caring man I think I've read about good with his Elbow, as well

Pratchett is awesome, but I'm fairly sure I've said that before.

Personally, I'm not that fond of the early books, looking back. They're much weaker than the rest. Good to read just to get the basics - and they're not actually *bad* - but be prepared for some character changes.

The wonderful thing about the Discworld novels is that almost every joke has some real world or literaturary basis, which if you know the source the joke is mocking you will find the joke funnier, but the jokes are funny even if you don't know what the joke is mocking.

I still need to get my hands on the other death books as well as practically every other discworld novel Only one I own is Soul Music but I've read others. Love that Terry. He's a legend.

I watched the recent visual renditions of Colour of Magic and Light Fantastic. Loving the vision of Rincewind as an older man rather than young, which kinda makes some semblance of sense considering his 40 years of failure as a wizard.
