Well, I was glad to see Uruguay go home after an excellent match against the Wehrmacht German National team. But that Forlan, I just can't help but to shiver when I see his free kicks! That last one that hit the bar? Oh my, oh my, it'll take some for him to forget that one He had that pretty beautiful volley at 2-2 as well. But in the end I thing Germany deserved that Bronze, they work so perfectly together.

Now! Today we've got the final! I'm actually not quite sure who I'm cheering for as I feel both Spain and the Netherlands are fun to watch and deserve a World Cup victory, but I think I'm leaning against Spain. First the European Championship 2 years ago and now maybe the WC! Too bad they'll go financially bankrupt in the celebration
    ...and a hopeful new year!

A close game and a winner for Spain. They deserve it...

One of the most ugly first halves by Holland, including high kicks on opposition players... It's just not the way you play football.

congrats to spain... and to Holland... I am shocked and not sure what to say? I mean from the very start of dirty football how can anyone give the commiserations... there was no deserve after the first few minutes..., and how many cards won by the dutch??? yellow yellow yellow.....

Aye. Spain deserved that victory. After some really foul play by the Dutch, some overly easy falls from the Spanish Spain really was the best team. And seriously! NL got 7 yellow cards and 1 red(from 2 yellow, total of 9 yellow)! That's a hell of a lot! And they deserved every single one of them, could easily have gotten at least 2-3 more red as well...
    ...and a hopeful new year!

The match was mostly boring... it wasn't until extra time where it got a lot better.

And yeah the dutch didn't play very fairly XD the karate kick would have been straight red card if it was any other match, and Van Bommel was probably the troll of the match, succeeding Materazzi from the last world cup final.

I am surprised they set up the way they did. The players on the field could have acquitted themselves better and they were capable of meeting the Spanish on footballing terms. The foul from De Jong should have been a red, no question. Alonso's lucky he's still got a throat to breathe out of

I was heartbroken for the Uruguayans... last kick, last action of the game and they could have gone home with the Golden Boot at least. Forlan was the one player who truly mastered the ball in this tournament and is a deserved winner of the Golden Ball as best player of the tournament.

Spain have done it. Only the third team to be European and World champs at the same time (West Germans in '72/'74 and French in '98/2000). Best team on the planet is mostly Barcelona and parts Real Madrid

Puzzled as to how they awarded the Golden Boot to Thomas Müller though... why on earth should assists count as a tie-breaker? They're not even an official statistic!

They awarded it to the German player? Sure he was good but Forlan had more spectacular goals IMO.

Edit: Wait, what? Sorry I got confused. Müller got the golden boot and Forlan got the golden ball.

yeah, thought that was what I said. Why they couldn't have just shared the Golden Boot (each no player had more than five goals a piece) was beyond me...

In Sepp Blatter's eyes, that probably passes as fair.

Even though I did feel a bit sorry for them I just can't forget they got to the semis through cheating against Ghana. I would have loved to have an African team through the quarters so I just won't forgive them Also - I'll blame their team for their referee!

Seems you know your football. I was just talking to a friend discussing if any other team had ever done it, guess I'll take the answers from you. As for Spain consisting of 7 Barca players I guess it goes to show just how good they are both in club and now international football!

As for the golden boot I think it was an OK way of settling it. Not quite sure how they've done it before, but this way seemed pretty fair to me if they can't share it (I just presume they can't?)

Well, yes. Shame, otherwise their tournament was very good. Now they'll be associated with that for several years to come, at least until an African team advances further

'course I know my football. I am a mine of useless statistics, me Good to see my knowledge accepted as truth for once Barca weren't the best team in Europe this year though. That honour went to Inter who had to beat Barcelona on the way to the final.

I don't see why the trphy couldn't be duplicated and shared out. Odds are that in such a varied field as "goals scored" you're not always going to have one standout player romping away from the rest. Chances are very high that players will finish equal, and just because Sneijder played more minutes than Villa who didn't set up as many as Müller shouldn't rule them out of the goalscorer's award!

    As the Aussie commentators said:

Spain came out saying they wanted to play like Barcelona, all we have to do now is wait for Real Madrid to hold a press conference where they will announce they want to play like Barcelona....

    anyway back to the chat...

One of the things that was great was Holland after the defeat still presented the guard of honor to the Spanish. The thing that disappointed me was (not sure what your TV coverage showed) that when the Dutch coach was presented his medal for runners up, it was presented by the Spanish royal family, and as they put it on him, you can actually see him roll his eyes at the queen (not sure of the real term for her), and the second his foot leaves the podium he removes the medal and hides it in his jacket. Can anyone confirm if he even bothered joining the guard of honor? Simply from what i can see, what he did was so disrespectful to the Spanish!
