    Japan Trip Planning

I could use a little assistance. I am currently planning (and have been for the last 2 years) a trip to Japan. There is a group of us that are going but I am coordinating the whole thing. Many basics are already decided such as:
When we are going: Likely November 2013 though it is relient on the Osaka Marathon's date.
How Long the trip will be: 2 to 3 weeks (most likely 2)
Where we are staying: A nice hotel in Kyoto sitting directly next to and between the Imperial Palace and the International Manga Museum.
Car Rental: One at the moment but a 2nd my be rented if the group grows larger.
Translator: Working on it. Though several of us know enough to get by it would be nice to have someone in the group or someone there to meet us that knows the language more sufficiently.
Base cost of trip: $2500US (per person and at the moment, covers flight, hotel, and car)

There is a lot that still needs planned. The biggest thing is I'd like any recommendations on where to go while there. There are obvious places like specific cities, but I want to know specifics of where in those cities I should visit. (Example: I want to see the Battleship Mikasa in Yokosuka (part of Tokyo)) Each person will basically be allowed to do their own thing during the trip but it would just be nice to not wander around Japan aimlessly...though I find that often allows for more interesting site-seeing. It would just be nice to have a list of recommended places to see. And if anyone recommends finding Ken Akamatsu's home and worshipping it as though he were Zeus himself...already thought of that.

Any other recommendations would also be welcome (Where to avoid, food to try, events to consider).

As said, this is being coordinated to the date of the Osaka Marathon in 2013. This is because myself and at least one of the other group members intend to run it (if you were curious).

If this thread goes nowhere I'll lay off it, but if enough people help out I'll try to keep them posted on how things progress. I'll also post pictures when we get back. I'll even bring you back pictures of souveniers I would have bought for you all.

And FYI, anyone who thinks they'd like to and be able to join us is more than welcome.

For a short time, Japan was giving away free airfare, then budgetary constraints hit and they said "nevah mind"
