Found out that the 30th is Eila's name day in Finland. I have no reason to believe this practice isn't carried over to the SWverse and isn't celebrated in Suomus.

    Thus... Eila day!

    Every day is Eila day!

    Suomus is best mus!
*glare* You be careful with Sanya!

I am positive Miss Juutilainen received a postcard from a certain short-haired witch often seen with a broom... Unless the Neuroi sank the mail ship.

Too bad my greetings will not reach Britannia in time.

Can't think who that would be. Refresh the memory, ol' chap! Those darn Neuroi would be picking off supply chains the world over, so mail will be even more of a problem... Thing is, it'll get there. She'll see it, whenever it turns up.

thought you knew me by now, Kata. It's unlike me to say something totally random. If there's an obscure reference somewhere I'll usually put it in

Now, what with it being the perfect time of year for witchy goodness, I was planning to divvy up a good healthy serving of Halloween pics, but these are proving to be harder to organise than time allows, so please accept my apologies, but I will have those for you some time this week

For now, I leave you with the following:
    Happy tater
    Anything Lucchini can do...
Yoshika can do better? Well, when speaking in terms of volume, anyway. No idea of the quality of raids that took place...

The famous Black-and-White Witch has put on her strikers. Art by Kinntarou, high-tech by Nitori Kawashiro.

See, this is why I accepted Aeris' post earlier. It's not Strike Witches, but this series is such an easy crossover it's untrue Thanks for that.

    more witches should wear hats

    ---

I'll have those Halloween pics sorted and uploaded soon. Sorry, peeps >< I've just not got round to it.

In the meantime, we'll have Eila model for us again.

Simple. An alliance is being formed between Gallia and Orussuomus Either that or this is Eila sizing up another attempt on Perrine's glasses

This is a disarmingly cute pic but I can't escape the fact it's foreshadowing some mischief. Dat grin and dat blush are hinting at some tragedy about to befall Perrine

Shame this is the only ds pic up on the boorus o_O Must have more!

oh, and found me a Sanya for the OP

    Here comes a new challenger!

who do you pick? What kind of game would this be? Looks to be a beat-em-up, but could also be a good racer too. Or flight-sim-thing, of course

I'm quite a fan of the '50' in place of 'player', too

The second season BD and DVD releases contain booklets with information and trivia regarding the Witches in general and power level statistics in particular Here's a comparison of the 501st JFW's power levels. Any abilities augmented by the addition of Striker Units during battle are given in parentheses.

501st Joint Fighter Wing (Strike Witches) Power Level Comparison

    Top: Yoshika, Mio, Lynette, Minna
    Middle: Trude, Erica, Shirley, Francesca
    Bottom: Perrine, Sanya, Eila

The table provides a serious katakana exercise for us unexperienced.

I spent a while decrypting the pink diagram, getting:

    RI-NE-tsu-TO BI-SHI-yo-tsu-PU

(I am far from sure about the final letter, but "PU" seems like a good bet. Probably a script design where the handakuten ring has been placed differently from what one sees most often.)

    That would read as:

    rinetto bishoppu

which would no doubt stand for

    Lynette Bishop

...And yes, that matches Lynette's position in your explanation of the table.

(I wonder why Perrine's diagram lacks the H of her middle name. Who would have thought Perrine lacked H?!)

thanks for confirming that for me, matey. I wasn't completely sure who was supposed to be in that position in the diagram, but it made sense that it was Lynette. I didn't know how her name was constructed in katakana so it's been interesting to read through your process of determining her name, and wondering how the Japanese dealt with a name ending with P

    Three cheers for rinnetto bishyoppu!!

Commiserations for Perrinu though. Being stuck that far from Sakamoto in the list (power of TEN and she's fading?) must rankle I too was thrown by the lack of H. Never an accusation that can be thrown at Perrine

Those Elma + Eila + Nipa pics deepen the fandom lore of the earlier connections between Suomusian witches even further. I wonder if there is a whole little tradition of Eila/Nipa fan fiction in Japan.

Glad I can still surprise you It wasn't an actual birthday, rightly, but it proved ample reason for another celebration of Suomus Witches. I suppose I could do the same for July 4th and other special days I do have rather a huge collection of images now I have used up my postable Sumous though, so am now on a quest for more

The witches referred to their original units and previous colleagues in other stories and in the voice and drama CDs, I think. I know there's much reference to it in the fandom, certainly. Fan fiction and art quite often has Nipa thinking of Eila and remembering about how well they got on when training together. A couple of English fan pieces that I've read do touch on Eila/Nipa's interaction, so I'd like to think this is the widespread inspiration for writing and drawing that it deserves to be. There's plenty of scope for Elma-abuse as seen in the sledge pic above and they're going to have had time to develop quite a relationship in Suomus. Eila's probably the oblivious one in this, so there's a little role-reversal in Nillu to Eilanya

    Also hurrah for Harthorn.

Holy Christ (pun intended), what a bombardment!

All witches, take off for a counterattack. All maintenance personnel, find shelter or take cover.

I apologise. It seems I was correct and it was your last flood of the year. not to worry though, as I bring you the first Witchy flood of the new year!!

Fumikane has been posting a calendar, which I thought would be appropriate. Sadly, it's not for 2011, so while it's not exactly useful, it's certainly worth studying

I give you the wartime equivalent of the Pirelli Calendar (twenty or so years before the original of same was published, in fact).

    504th Calendar: Cover
    504th Calendar: Feb
    504th Calendar: May
    504th Calendar: Jun
    504th Calendar: Sep
    504th Calendar: Oct
    504th Calendar: Dec

more to follow when I nab 'em
