Not so fan, but a fic none the less.

The only sound in the small snow filled meadow was of the rustle of leather against snow. The siloutte barely visible in the moonlight of a hooded figure moved as silently as the weather would allow. He stopped and knelt, feeling a presence following him.

    !
Back about ten yards was that presence. Even less visible in the moonlight, the ethereal girl still stole behind a tree when he turned to her.

"How long are ye gonna be followin' me" the man said in his heavy Irish accent.

"You can see me?" The girl asked poking her head around the tree

"Well I dint till ya went and poked yer head out! Aye never thought I'd see the day when a ghost can fall for a child trick."

"Your not a hunter are you?" She asked

"No lassie, I don' hunt ye'r kind. Only the ones bein' menaces to society for what it is" he said and motioned her over.

He appreciated the company ghosts offered, and liked never being truly alone. He was Aertimis Mc Haverson, exorcist for the protestant church, and the only sworn defender of benevolent spirits.

(Using post splits as story splits)

    70 years earlier

It was mid morning in the village of Cheddar, and the morning routine began.

"Mara! Your faster than me slow down!" A little girl exclaimed running as fast as she could.

"Ria you'll never get any fasta if I slow down for you!" Mara said over her shoulder.

But soon they both stopped, the familiar monotone of propellers filling the sky.

    "Are they Spits?" Ria asked.

"I don't think so. They sound diffrent some how. We need to get to school now" mara responded.

    The two never made it.

The bomb impacted mere feet from Mara in full flight. It ripped the teenage girl to shreds, and she was killed instantly. Ria, running slower than her sister, was licked by fire, and blown back a few feet. Ria was able to get up, but when she went looking for her big sister she found her head, a permanent gaze of horror etched on it. She picked the head up, the kindergartener not understanding death, and ran to the school house.

THe school was in airraid mode, all the students inside and huddled under desks.

"Miss Gordon!" Ria cried, throwing the doors open

"Ria get inside where have you-"miss gordon replied but as she stood, she gasped.

Aertimis was stalking a Ghoul of a young girl in the area, one that preyed upon the airmen at the local airfield, luring them near by crying, and the pretense of leading her to safety, then she would devour them.

"what be yer name lassie, not your Ghost name yer Real name! the one ye had whil ye were alive!" he asked.

"I think they called me Mara, it's been a long time." the ghost answered.

Aertimus whipped out a pda and began typing on it, and waited.

"Mara Donovan, 1940, missing age 17 after air raid wiped out village of Cheddar, sister Ria killed in air raid, parents: unaccounted for. Well it seems we know what happened to ye then."

"wait, Ria died? i saw her pick up my head and run to the school house before....." she trailed off, and a look of horror filled her as the recollection descended upon her.

"Aye lassie. the report here says that a 'unidentified mass was in her arms' i assume that was ye head." he said.

"i- guess there's nothing we can do right?"

while this conversation had gone on, they had traveled several hundred feet, and the fence of the airfield was visible now. a little girl was holding hands with one of the pilots, walking by the fence.

"stay here lassie, it get's ugly from here" he said as he nimbly climbed a tree, and moved swiftly tree to tree in the dense pine forest.

he pulled out a bow, and Mara recognised the tip as a binding head, to capture, not kill.

the arrow peirced the girl's body , sending her into convulsions, the pilot looked up to see Aertimus jump down.

"oi, what're ye about shooting kids?" the man said.

"shut up ye ploddy ape i saved ye, this is no lassie lemme tell ye." he said, taking a silver coin and placing it on the still very much thrashing girl's forehead. she calmed, as the coin bound her.

"lassie! show me ye true form!" he cried.

the little girl morphed into a half skeletal, half torn body, and mara, who had floated up by now, gasped.

"Lass, i told ye to stay back!"

"That's my sister! you Shot her!" she said.

"listen lassie, this is not Ria, this a ghoul."

    "M-Mar-Mara?" the ghoul said weakly.

"Ria!" Mara rushed to her,and cradeled the small child, being careful to avoid the undead bane items on her.

"Mara, it's so good to see you ok, Miss Gordon said you wouldn't be back, and then the terrible noise..."

"Ria, it's ok now. we can be together forever again!"

Aertimis placed his blessed glove on Mara's shoulder.

"Mara, lassie, Ria's devoured humans and is a threat to society. it's my job to purge her. unless ye can assure me she won't be killin, i can't disobey mah duty."

    "Ria, is this true?

"I wanted to go home...but Mara wasn't there to lead me, so those kind airmen helped me, but they didn't want to play, so i ate them..."

the distinct click of a shotgun clicked, and Mara saw Aertimis raise it.

"I cannot wait lassie. move out of the way or ye'll be hurt severly"

Mara felt herself move, but she didn't want to. the shotgun blased, Ria's body dissolved, and Mara looked in horror.

Aertimis sheathed the weapon, and motioned to the ghost, indicating her to follow him.

Aertimus explained the details of the case report to the ghost, and she soon understood. Ria's personality had refused to die when the schoolhouse was bombed. She laid dormant in the ground for 70 years, and had begun stirring a couple months ago.

"Lassie, ye don' know how many of the evil ones I been assigned te lately have been the wee ones.some thin bout this year er something brings out all the children." He lamented

"I've seen several generations of kid grow older now. It seems like bloody yesterday the war ended..." Mara said.

"I know lassie. By the way have ye ever seen the insid of a computer?"

"Computah? What is that some sort of creature or aeroplane?

"By Great Uncle Flannigan's forty silver coins ye don' know about the computer?"

    The ghost shook her head.

    He produced his PDA.

"This lassie is a computer. It kin tell ye anything ye want to know...just about. Like for instance.... I have detailed files on ye family tree afte ye death. See, ye older brother survived the attack, and these here are ye neices, looks like ye woulda had great grandchildren now."

Mara simply let all of the information she just received sink in.

After about three hours they arrived at a small shack wedged between two rocks, it had antennae and wires sticking out.

"Lassie this is home" he said swinging the door open.

The inside was larger, as thought the rocks had been hollowed out, and lining the walls were three mannequin looking objects, but way more detailed.

"Go ahead and possess one, that's what they be here for"he said as he turned on the power.

" But their just doll-" she said as she touched onen and she was pulled inside.

    "Wait what happened" she exclaimed

"Wait fer the thing to analyse ye and it'll connect with ye to give ye a lass' body to walk around in" he explained.

She felt herself being probed, and the manneqquin changed it's shape to fit her.

"Not bad lassie. If I were a bit younger and maybe a little less old fasioned I'da courted ye! But I'm old now. I treat the people I give life back to as me youngins"

    " This isn't a mannequin"

"No no lassie, a body generater is what it is. It'll sit and analyse yer imput for two weeks and during that tim it'll be generating ye a heart, bones, flesh, and everything else ye be needin'. Then at last ye'll get yer life back, and go have ye children"

"How can I repay you good sir?"

"Put in ye will a donation to the Haverson Ghost Rehabilitation Organization, that's all"

The next morning mara was still awake, for 70 years she haden't slept unless she wanted to.

Her "body" protested, but she remained awake, unable to fall asleep. Aertimus made some breakfast for her and while she figured out what food. Tasted like again, he told her things about the world, about the end of the war and the years after, about things she knew very little about, as her "haunt" only had been occupied for a shprt while recently by a young couple and their 5 year old.

Mara walked... walked...she thought about that in depth like never before. she was walking again, as if she had never stopped.

She was walking toward the edge of town now, her first mission was to establish her identity. Aertimus explained that the outlying settlement in this area were known for runaways, and that wouldn't be a problem for her to establish a new identity somewhere as basically anyone.

she thought long and hard and decided to stick to her family name, and because of this, aertimus was out now searching for her grave, if there was one. the malformed head was likely buried, but where? either way they needed to destroy her old remains.

She came upon a house, and recalled the street name. this was Cheddar, a rebuilt town. she invisioned the old schoolhouse< the town square, even her house. and before long she was standing in front of her old house.

It was the only original building in the town.

a plaque was erected out front, a relief of her family etched in it, and a telling of the destruction of Cheddar. on a plot next door was a crashed HE-111 bomber from the war, and a small plaque there too. she walked toward her mental image of the school house and felt her heart race after a few hundered steps.

there was a clear indentation in the land here. about 20 paces wide and deep enough. A bomb crater.

This was the spot where her life had ended so violently, and she could feel a palpitable presence of herself. The presence's energy flowed into her, and the peices of the past began to fill in.

A car pulled up behind her, and stopped, a man and his wife. he rolled the window down< and in a heavy german accent, asked, "miss, vould you liek a ride into tovn?"

"That would be appreciated good sir" she said as she turned.

She got in, and sat in the back seat, his wife turned to regard her.

"your a pretty sort, what ye be about walkin i the early morinin by yeself in these parts?" her english accent apparent.

"I ran away...from worchester..." she said fighting back emotion.

The woman looked at her softly, and turned to her husband. He nodded, and she turned back to her.

"Name's Dana Hermann, this is Hans Hermann, my husband. How would ye like a job?" the woman said.

    "wait...A Job?"

" Yep, and a place to stay as well, we need a receptionist for Hans' PI office, would ye be interested?"

"Aye ma'am" she said, and after they had dropped her off, she established her name and cover age,and headed back to Aertimus.

Aertimus didn't return to the shack until late that night. He had been out all day looking through the burial records, trying to find the record of an unidentified head being buried.

    It had nearly been fruitless.

The head was stored in the tomb of the unidentified in the local cemetary. Aertimus, being friends with the undertaker, had been allowed access, and now carried the nondescript wooden box home.

As he entered, he noticed Mara's face change emotions very quickly.

"Now lassie, this be a delecate matter, and i don't be expectin' ye to not react when ye see it. but, This is what's been identified as ye head. the rest a ye is likely long gone. so this is be the last evidence ye ever existed in the 40's."

He opened the box, and in it lay a very well preserved roughly head shaped object, the red hair on it burned away in some places, the face barely recognizable, the jaw shattered. Mara stared at it at length, and let her ghostly hand seperate from the replacer as she pushe herself into her old mind for a moment.

there was nothing but darkness, and the last image she'd seen. Her sister running after her, and the sky filled with bombers. but the angle was off. she examined the image in her mind, and realised the eyes had seen their last at the moment after her head was separated from her body.

She retracted and began to cry.

"Aw, lassie. I dun rightly have alot to be sayin, but this is an object now. this machine your in is makin ye a new one. no point in holdin on te ye past missy. How bout ye tell me ye spirit name, the one that came to ye when ye gained sentience?"

    "Aeris"She said stifling a sniffle.

"arright. Ye know what that means? Aer- is a prefix meaning a variety of things, but the -is suffix makes it mean one thing. Aeris means Heir of Light."

    Mara looked at him quizzically.

"Heiress, Anywhay, ye are what the name tells me. Perhaps there was to be some sort of thing for ye to be doin', dun rightly know, but ye be on ye way to life again lassie. then ye can start fresh."

Mara put the head back in the box, and aertimus sealed it.

"now, how do ye git rid o somethin that survived two bomb blasts?"

"Let's burn it." mara said solemnly.
