    Dead Languages Society

I'm taking Khamul's suggestion, and starting a thread for language discussion. The thread title is not entirely true, because even though no one is speaking Old English or Old Frisian these days, their various offspring whom they directly or indirectly influenced are alive and well (I'm using one of them now, for that matter).

    Ok Khamul, go crazy

At first glance, this seemed like the most intelligible part of what you posted earlier. See if I have a clue or not:

    * I connect OE and with modern English and and modern German und.
    * OE fisceras ~ Engl. fishers ~ Germ. Fischer ~ Swedish fiskare.
    * OE fiscas ~ Engl. fish ~ Germ. Fische ~ Swedish fiskar.
    * OE gefengon ~ Germ. gefangen (infinitive fangen) (~ Sw. fångat, without the ge- element).

OE tha and the somewhat confuse me. I would like to connect at least tha with the modern Germanic definite articles, though.

I must warn you that if you talk about "dead languages" with a broad definition like that, I might go on dropping stuff like Old Hungarian:

Am I supposed to not be able to pronounce any of it in my head?

"It"? Which language(s) are you thinking of?

Khamul, you're on the right track, and if you get a good grasp of that line, it gives a clue as to the structure of the others. The whole passage is a very typical OE literary device.

As to the Old Hungarian, I've got nothing, at least not off the top of my head, but I'll work on it, and see what I can come up with. Are there any resources you'd recommend?

Does Gaelic count as a dead language? How about the Doric dialect of Scotland?

Wikipedia claims that both are quite alive, if clearly declining (well, at least Scottish Gaelic).

Yet I think discussing stuff like older Gaelic texts in this thread would be appropriate - if only any of us can state anything about them. But is the head of the society on vacation?

I wouldn't be surprised if that were the case.
