I didn't quite get the boundaries bit, but this is my answer to your question:

I use the XChat IRC client, but rarely switch it on. There is a handful of channels on various IRC networks where I go to hang out when I am really bored or need some special expertise. Sometimes I fix an online appointment with a friend (by PM or by phone), and then we chat intensively for a while.

I have been mildly interested in installing some Windows Live Messenger compatible free software on my desktop, but that would require either a bit of help or a lot of extra motivation.
