    Agonising Organising

    After my travails with my MacBook last week, I came to the harrowing conclusion that I needed to properly archive my images. If the machine wasn't fixed I'd have struggled a little bit, as I'd have had to pay out for a new Mac to restore to, since the only copy of my extensive image collection (I say extensive, it may not be massive but there's several thousand, at least) was only on a Time Machine backup.

    I hate the thought of backing stuff up, because it means I've got to sort everything out I've got into the habit of tagging my image filenames a whole lot better recently, especially since I started contributing materially to Danbooru, so recent images are going to be searchable by show, artist, fetish and whatnot. Add to that the superior OSX indexing features over Windows. Some of the older stuff though, that'll be troublesome...

    I've had my machine for four years and only really started tagging properly the last year or two. There's a lot to plough through.

    does anyone else here take a tagging approach to the images they save? How many other bleeders loathe archiving as much as I do? Do you understand the importance of archives, whether intriinsically or as a result of some horrifying equipment mishap?

    i make a hash that disguises the nature of the image like a cipher.

    1g23a45c means

    1g= 1girl
    23a= adult content image #23
    45c= 4+5 determine the exact nature of the image, c is rough breast size.

    Story time!!!

    A pictures life on Suigintous PC

    "It all started on Konachan... I used to be a happy picture among thousands of others really great pictures (NBB).
    Then one day I was downloaded by this random person named Suigintou... I though we matched perfect together as I was tagged suigintou aswell...
    The first place I ended was in a folder named Stuff/Pictures/Anime... I often where used as a wallpaper or an Avatar on different sites.
    Now after some time I suddently was taken off as wallpaper... I where replaced as avatar and got thrown down in another folder named
    D:\Suigintou\Pictures\2011\Anime\Rozen Maiden\Suigintou
    I haven't been touched for quite some time now.... but sometimes I see the light for 1 sec when Suigintou is browsing through the folder. I'm not worthy anymore... Maybe I should just die.... at least that was what I where thinking...
    Until one day... when I was uploaded to a phone... and became a wallpaper again "

    I have taken steps in that direction but remain reluctant to do it the Danbooru way. Different operating systems have had different maximum lengths for filenames, and I am afraid of confusion when material is transferred between computers.

    My passion for archiving comes from times well before the microcomputer became a basic tool of every household. The idea is simply like, what sense does it make to keep old stuff (whether files, paper or other things) in storage if its location is unknown and thus its usability rate very low? Today's influx of information, texts, pictures, music, and physical items is massive compared to those days, though. Properly organising everything of some value seems hopeless.

    File and directory backups are a separate question. It is quite possible to label and copy directories full of unorganised mess.

    I like your codings Trouble for me would be that the majority of my piccies probably wouldn't warrant a last letter

    That was a heart-warming tale. Archiving is cold and clinical, but necessary at times. Look at the lost swathes of piccies from the beginning of the NBB... Some imageboards have failed over time too. I used to visit Sagubooru most of the time and thought it'd always be there if I wanted to find the pic again. I was wrong

    Your picture's time could come again! Give it hope! Keep your pervy images alive!

    fair point. I've not had any problem using Linux operating systems for my archiving needs so far, but it could come up at some point and I'd be stuck :/ I've got a NAS drive which is accessed by OSX, Linux (various flavours) and Windows (various flavours from Win2K and up) and not hit any snags yet, so I guess I'm just lucky

    My computer's like my rooms. I know for a fact I will never get it perfectly tidy, but to get something usable is a goal. Something which means I have a good stab at finding something when the question comes up. I have a character flaw which means it takes far too long for me to give up looking for something; if I can't find it within 10 minutes, I will continue until the picture is found

    I may not be able to find everything, but I will be able to find everything important

    H cup is my max, and even then i only have one of those.

    n is the universal variable for any number, and i think it fits. and as i have yet to see an N cup size( in existence) it works.

    I don't have an archive of saved pics from nbb, etc. But I do have an archive system for Pictures. Seeing as I'm a photographer these days.

    I use Adobe Lightroom, though Adobe Bridge would work better for non-photographic images. As it's got all the associated program links, allows for sub directories of photos without moving the actual picture, etc. So I can have a collection of photos all of the same theme appearing in the same place, and have them saved across 6 drives.

    That one was tongue-in-cheek, Aeris. I reckon there's pics that qualify for "N" size somewhere, but the measurement exists, so it's a valid note

    that's an awesome archive you got there, lockx your own mini-booru! Wonder how much that costs?

    The programs cost a bit *sigh*
    And it's over 6 drives due to weirdness saving them off my camera, not because there's that many (yet)

    I wish I'd done something similar to my old shows collection. But I ended up wiping that.

    I am loath to pay for an archiving solution but if you find one that works for you and doesn't cost the earth I don't see why you shouldn't use it. More so if you need competent backup for your profession

    To go back to Kata's point that "properly organising may be [ultimately] hopeless", I've realised that I merely want to try doing this for peace of mind. If I can't find a particular picture it may vanish from the internet, even given the abundance of boorus we have now. If a piccie's made enough of an impact on me to make me save it, I should archive it properly so's I can find it again
