    John Terry - England Captain

The FA have removed the England football captain's armband from John Terry.

He is due to stand trial in July over racial abuse allegations after an incident with QPR's Anton Ferdinand. In a statement, the FA said Terry would not "captain the England team until the allegations against him are resolved".

Terry, who lost the captaincy once previously, has entered a plea of not guilty to the charge.

Rio Ferdinand, Anton's brother, England vice-captain and former captain, has ruled himself out of the running for the captain's job, though whether this is out of solidarity with Terry (which might seem odd since the offended party is his own brother) or due to the way he was informed he was to be dropped as captain in favour of Terry last time is unclear.

The FA apparently initially understood the trial would be concluded before the European Championships.

Thing is, as this cloud's still over Terry's head, can England pick him for the tournament at all if he's not going as captain?

Despite being widely-recognised as captain, this will likely mean that Terry's record of never leading England at a major tournament will continue, and this may have been his last chance to do so.

    Any reaction?

Well, seeing as that Terry has always been one of my least favorite players, I am of course very pleased by the FA's decision and their strict stance against racism they have been taking, as shown with the verdict on Suarez. Rio Ferdinand has been an excellent player for the Three Lions and the actions of Capello of giving Terry the captaincy without even consulting Rio were despicable, but what more is there to expect from the man?

As far as the future captain for England at Euro 2012 and beyond, I think they should pick a player who will be a mainstay for years to come in either Joe Hart (even though I despise the bitter Blues), Jack Wilshere, Phil Jones, Chris Smalling (glory glory ), or perhaps Gary Cahill. Players like Gerrard, Lampard, Cashely Cole, Rooney, Barry, etc. are players that I do not believe are captain material.

I think England should pick an established leader for the upcoming tournament, then gradually show they don't need to rely on the faded "golden generation" any more. I think Gerrard might be a good bet for it if Terry and Ferdinand aren't in the picture, but my bet for captain would be Scott Parker He'll run all evening and sweat blood for the cause, and he's not yet up to his neck in controversy.

Over the longer haul, Hart might have a shot, but I've never been a great fan of goalies being captains. You can yell all you like, but you can't get involved with ref's disputes and decisions if you're down the other end of the field. Your captain needs to be able to state his player's case (or pull 'im away if he's flying off the handle and calm him down).

I agree with the FA's stance on this whole thing but can't understand why Terry got the captaincy back in the first place.

you're just saying that to antagonize me, aintcha?

Balls to Beckham. I never really rated him as a player and couldn't see what England managers have seen in him down the years. I am against him coming back for one last hurrah for the Brit team at the Olympics, but rumours abound that's going to happen.

Capello's fallen on his sword over this. His public stance on Terry staying captain has lead to him resigning. Okay, he was going after the Euros, but now this leaves us rudderless again, four months before a major tournament. I wanted him to stay on til after the Euros and complete his contract. Lots of folk were clamouring for him to go after the World Cup, but he stayed on (mainly because the FA couldn't afford to pay off the contract at that point.) with the idea of leading us through this year. Hasn't happened.

Horrifically handled by everyone involved. The England football setup is a shining example of how NOT to do things.

No preparation is ever properly smooth for any nation, but by gar we attract a lot of problems for ourselves >_<
